LOCATION
Our farmhouse is a 16th century Charentise
farm, which has been tastefully renovated sympathetically to retain the old world
charm but modern conveniences, situated in beautiful country side on the edge of
the French nature reserve of which we own part, within easy reach of the beaches
at Royan,La Rochelle, and close to Angouleme, Bordeaux, Cognac,St
Emilion,Aubiterre,Jonzac a spa town with indoor holiday pool complex wave pool
etc and a casino, and many more attractions and beautiful places to visit, there
is golf, horse riding, jet ski lake, fishing which is free in our lakes with carp
to over 40 lb,fantastic restaurants, aubergines, you will never see it all in one
holiday. The locals are friendly and due to the historic past of the area with
the King of England marrying the Queen of Aquitain retaining the chic splendour
of its rural setting famous for the wine and cognac, most visitors enjoy relaxing
by the pool, having a barbecue or just chilling out in the fantastic south facing
location.
The area of Charente is well known for its excellent cuisine,
cognacs and wines. In the local area alone, there are several fantastic auberges
and many fabulous restaurants to visit. The Charentaise people are well known to
be the friendliest and warmest of people, especially to the English, with whom
they share a romantic historic past. In nearby towns, there is a wonderful
variety of shops, as well as historic and futuristic sights to see, and places
of interest to visit. Maquignon, set in rural South West France, is such a
peaceful place for unwinding and relaxing and enjoying the countryside, yet set
in such a way that you can travel around and enjoy the "chic, splendour and
culture" that France is renowned for.
Quite close is a village in the direction of Chalais
called Aubiterre the prettiest village in France. It has the oldest Monolithic
Church well worth a visit. At the same time you could visit Chalais. On Monday
they have a fantastic market 8 am until 12. For lunch, there are lots of
places to eat but for a real slice of French life, on the way back visit Mr.
Pourier at a small village called Bardenac just outside Chalais. It's at the top
of the hill past the church, it's a bar where all the French go. For
approximately €10 you can eat and drink until you explode.
St EMILLION and the surrounding
area is a 'Mecca for wine buffs' and the town is beautiful. A train ride around
the vineyards etc is available.
COGNAC is approximately half hours drive away and is
the most chic town in Charente. It has lovely shops and restaurants, (don't
forget they shut at lunchtimes). You can get a great meal in the main square at
a restaurant for about 10 euros. Many restaurants and bars serving a plat de
jour to a full-blown French lunch, it's a chic place with lots to see and
explore. You can visit all the Cognac houses, we think the best is Remi Martin
it costs a few euros and includes a train ride through the vineyards and the
cellars. There is no walking involved, Tel 05 45 35 76 66 and they will give you
the times of the English tours and you can book your place. It is situated at
Merpins. We suggest a morning visit and lunch in Cognac or an afternoon visit
shopping and dinner or return for a barbeque. DON'T MISS GOING TO COGNAC.
The drink of Charente is PINEAU de Charente. The best produce and the
president of the federation is in our village, his name is Jackie BODIN. You can
call on Jackie at anytime and he will show you round and give you plenty of
samples. To get to Mr Bodin turn right when facing the Inter Marche at Baignes
go for approximately 1/2 mile until you come to a cast iron railway bridge, turn
left follow the lane for approximately l/2 mile and the house in front of you La
Lande is the place. Tel 05 45 78 43 32. Tell them you are from Chez Maquignon.
His son who is normally there is called Jackie.
BAIGNES - THE CAFE DE PARIS in
the square is a great place for a drink. Tell them you are staying at Chez
Maquignon and they will make you very welcome. It is planned is to open a
brasserie and simple meals will be available. They are usually closed on a
Monday
ANGUOLEME The capital of Charente. Park near the hotel de Ville (Town
Hall) and explore the back streets there. There are over 100 small bistros
(Indian, Chinese, Mexican everything is catered for). It is a 30 minute ride
well worth the journey. Wonderful parks, buildings, cathedrals etc it is very
chic and shopping is good. At night the place comes alive.
BORDEAUX - an hour away - has
everything you can expect as the second city of France.
SUPERMARKETS - the one in
Baignes is excellent but we also feel Leclerc in Barbezieux (10 minutes away) is
much better and gives a wider choice. Also Auchan at La Couronne. Just off N10
on way to Anguoleme. This is a hypermarket with its own arcade of shops as well.
AUBERGES - (Farm Restaurants). This is the best eating in France in
our opinion. We use the following:
1. BAIGNES - Peirre & Michelle Jaulin - Puigareau
Tel:05 45 7842 52. It is past the Cafe De Paris in the Square. Follow the road
until you come to a crucifix, fork right and it is the first big house on the
left. You need to visit to make a reservation. Unfortunately they are only open
for Sunday lunch.
2. ORIOLLES - Chez Baron Andre Porcheron. Tel: 05 45 98 79 22.
Oriolles is the other side of the N10.
3. CHANTILLAC- Madam La Roche. Tel:05 45 78 4131. They
only do Sunday lunch, but it's ten Star eating. This is approximately 8km along
the N10 towards Bordeaux and turn right. Here you get the best duck in the area.
You eat in the distillery which is used at every vintage to produce eau de vie
to make cognac and Pineau de Charente, this is an experience not to be missed,
Fridays and Saturdays are the busiest days.
All the Auberges give you at least 5 or 6 courses,
Aperitif and all the wine you can drink. The prices are approximately 20 euros
plus per person. They mainly serve duck, veal, rabbit and other produce of the
farm. There is only one word for it FANTASTIC ! You won't want to do more than
one or two in a week and don't eat too much at lunchtime.
