LOCATION
Chantonnay
An attractive, friendly town
Chantonnay is a peaceful and attractive town, with some graceful
architecture to enjoy. It has a spacious design and a warm, friendly atmosphere,
and is keen to encourage tourism throughout the year. The practicalities of life
are well catered for, as there are three well stocked supermarkets as well as an
excellent range of other shops, banks, restaurants and a weekly
market.
A rambler’s paradise The typical Vendeen countryside around
the town of Chantonnay is perfect for walking. The ‘bocage’, the gently
undulating hills, make walking a pleasure rather than an athletic challenge.
There is, however, a challenge available to those of an energetic nature, as in
May Chantonnay hosts a ‘Four Day Walking Festival’. This is as much a social
event as a walking event, but if you are going to walk for the full four days be
prepared for a blister or two! The event attracts walkers from afar as well as
being enjoyed by the locals. Walking is the perfect way in which to discover
both the pretty countryside and the lovely buildings of the town and its
surroundings, with their red tiled roofs so typical of the region.
Leisure and pleasures in
Chantonnay Anyone who loves the gentler pleasures of life will enjoy
Chantonnay. There are beautiful parks and lakes to explore, with activities such
as sailing, swimming, windsurfing and canoeing on offer at the Lac de Rochereau.
The country park of Moulin Neuf is ideal for family outings, and has a safe
swimming lake with beaches for sunbathing and picnicking. It is important to
remember, however, that Chantonnay is less than an hour away from all the fun of
the Vendée coast, where glorious sandy beaches with water sports, bars and other
tourist attractions can be found.
Interesting fact: The gastronomy of the town is well
respected, and includes a delicious dish of beans (mogettes) with locally cured
ham. Definitely not to be missed!
Bazoges-en-Pareds
Take a short drive to
Bazoges-en-Pareds to visit the medieval keep and garden (le donjon et jardin
médiéval). Fully restored and furnished, you can climb to the high ramparts and
enjoy marvellous panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. Afterwards,
take a stroll in the medieval garden among the plants and flowers.
Mouilleron en
Pareds
Another short drive to visit the Musee des deux victoires. The
museums draw a parallel between Georges Clemenceau and Jean de Lattre, both born
in Mouilleron Pareds. Incredible that two giants in France's history were born
in the same small town. The museums are set in their houses of birth and show an
interesting insight into their lives and also the history of the
time.
