LOCATION
The
cottage is situated in a peaceful hamlet called La Barangerie, just outside the
small village of
La Chapelle-Thireuil. It sits on the border of two French
departments – the Vendée and the Deux Sèvres.
It’s approximately an hour’s
drive from the west coast, and is south of the Loire Valley.
More information on Vendee
attractions, activities, beaches, fishing etc can be found at the top of this
page in the links box to the right.
This alluring area of France has something for
everyone, and listed below are just a small selection of some of our favourite
places and activities…The cottage is situated in rural countryside so it’s ideal
for walking and cycling, right on the doorstep. With both, there’s the option to
follow the designated routes or just go and explore! There are many lakes and
rivers close by as well if you fancy a spot of fishing, and there’s also horse
riding just down the road in Saumort.
Just half an hour away is the vast
forest of Mervent. It’s a nature lover’s paradise with 12,360 acres of cliffs,
escarpments, lakes and rivers.
It’s also worth calling at nearby Vouvant for
refreshments. This 12th Century medieval village has cobbled streets, craft
shops and great views of the winding river.
Arçais, or ‘Venise Verte’ as it’s
known provides a great day out on the Poitou marshes. The network of waterways
can be explored on foot or bicycle but the best way (and the most entertaining!)
is to hire a punt
and paddle your way around, or hire a guide if you’re not
feeling brave!
Stop for a picnic, have a stroll and take in the
scenery.
If you prefer sunbathing and swimming there’s a great lake and beach
at Chassenon-le-Bourg, there are pedal boats for hire and a great restaurant up
the road which has lovely views across the water.
An action packed and
entertaining family day out can be found at the Adventure Park at La Chapelle St
Etienne – rope swings, tree top high lines and zip wires provide an adrenaline
packed experience.
For supplies, the local shop in La Chapelle-Thireuil
village is handy for essentials. A short drive away is Coulonges-sur-l’Autize
which has a huge supermarket and on Tuesdays it’s market day when this typical
French village really comes to life. A little further away is Niort, a charming,
historical city where you’ll find an abundance of boutiques, specialist
retailers, bars and restaurants. There’s also a great food market on daily,
although the best day to experience it is on Saturdays.
FURTHER AFIELD
The following places are
all within roughly an hours drive away...
Due west of the cottage, on the
coast is the charming port of La Rochelle.
This thriving historical town is
full of boutique shops, bars, and restaurants serving fresh seafood and local
wine. There’s also several museums, an aquarium, a bustling daily market, a park
and an annual film festival.
Just a short journey over the bridge will
provide you with a true taste of the mediterranean – Île de Ré. Dump the car and
explore the island by foot or bicycle. The food is stunning, as is the landscape
– lovely white sandy beaches and a chic marina.
Back on the mainland coast,
just north of La Rochelle are the picturesque beaches of La Faute, La Tranche,
L’Aiguillon and Châtelaillon. They are child friendly with lovely golden sand
and life guards for peace of mind so you can relax and enjoy the sea as well as
the sun.
Something really not worth missing is Le Puy-de-Fou – one of the
greatest shows in France. It tells the story of the history of the Vendeé
through spectacular performances and breathtaking special effects. There are two
shows, day time & evening (Cinéscénie), but be sure to book in
advance!
Another great attraction is Futuroscope. This theme park is based
upon multimedia and audio visual techniques. It has several 3D and a handful of
4D cinemas along with other attractions, some of which are the only examples in
the world.
Realistically, there are too many attractions to mention here so
we’ve left a really good guide book of the area in the cottage, and you’ll also
find lots more information about the area.
