From the moment we arrived we knew we had picked the perfect holiday home! The apartment was immaculate with a very useful food and toiletry hamper, having arrived on an evening after the shops had closed this was very much appreciated.
We were so lucky with the weather, it would have been easy for us to not go anywhere in the car as the beautiful beach is a handy five minute walk away (two minutes if we hurried)! We did venture out though on a few occasions and there are some lovely places to visit in the surrounding area.
There were 5 of us staying in the apartment, myself, my husband, 2 daughters aged 12 and 15 and my mum. The apartment was plenty big enough for the 5 of us, it really helped having 2 bathrooms and the outside shower to wash the sand off!!
Jane and Bill are really lovely and were on hand to give us advise on where to visit and were so helpful with any queries we had.
We wouldn't hesitate in recommending this beautiful property and look forward to going there again .
Owners Response
It was a privilege to share your family's enjoyment Carol. From the moment you all joined the beach party dancing to 60s rock classics in the sand on that first chilly evening, we knew you would love it! So glad you had such good weather the rest of your time here.

This was one of the best properties we have been to. On arrival after a long journey from the UK, we were met by Jane and Bill the owners who showed us where everything was and how it worked. There was a very welcome bag of goodies, which was very well stocked and provided us with our first meal and wine. Therefore no reason to go shopping as soon as we arrived. Lovely L'octtaine toiletries provided. The apartment was extremely clean and well equipped. I love to cook when I am away but this is not always easy in past accommodation we have rented. Here at the Yellow House we had everything I required, as I said earlier well equipped. It was a very bright and airy apartment. The outside was great with seating, separate BBQ area and off road gated parking. Lots of jigsaws and games to keep us entertained, we did want to relax. The beach was literally turn right and walk 50 yards. It was a beautiful beach with a mixture of soft sand and hard sand when the tide was out for all ball games. A beach cafe. Life guards on duty. The sea was warm, but very strong waves. However for small children the topography of the beach mean't that when the tide was out it left behind large pools for them to play in, therefore no need for them to go into the sea. This seemed very popular when we were there end July. The bakery was a short walk away, especially when you found your way through the houses. The supermarket was also only a short drive away. In a word PERFECT!! Book now

We had a lovely stay and certainly hope that we will be able to visit again.
The details on the website are accurate, and the apartment is very adaptable to suit the sleeping arrangements of guests. The apartment is clearly new, and has been finished to a high standard; it is certainly clean and well maintained; although since the beach is so close by, keeping sand at bay can be a struggle!
The owners, Jane and Bill, were able to help us out with a few queries we had on arrival and I think enabled us to make the most of our stay with their local knowledge and suggestions for good things to do in the local area.
I would definitely recommend this property; we travelled with four young children in our party, and having this huge beach a short walk away was just fantastic. We also visited the brand new water park, and had a great day out there. La Tranche itself has places to hire bikes, which we did, lots of restaurants and a large number of brilliant ice cream parlours, which the kids were particularly impressed with. It is worth being aware that unless you do cycle, you will need a car to visit most of these places - with the obvious exception of the beach.
Overall a great place to stay.

The owner was there to greet us on arrival and was very helpful. The accommodation was very well maintained and well stocked with cutlery, crockery and kitchen equipment. We were grateful for,the beach games, wind breaks and mats. We were a mixed family group and it suited all ages.

A great property in a lovely quiet location. A superb beach within easy walking distance and lots of lovely restaurants. You realty couldn't ask for much more!!
Owner Response
That's pretty much what we were aiming at - so glad you liked it, and particularly that it worked for the younger generation.

A great place to stay, the walk to the beach is very short and the beach is great. The apartment is well equipped and we could cook great meals. The shower in the apartment is fantastic and it was great to be so comfortable. Fully recommend for a place to stay. The contact with the owner was really good and made the visit very smooth.
Owner response
So glad you liked it, we were delighted you could come. So glad it suited the younger generation as well.
10 / 10 Zoe-and-John 26 July, 2016
This property was ideally located within a few minutes walk to the beach. There are great shops and restaurants close by and the apartment is ideally located for families wanting to take day trips to attractions within the Vendee area. The apartment is comfortable, well-maintained and the owners are incredibly helpful and quick to respond to enquiries.
The sunset at the beach is incredible and the ability to wander over and enjoy the beach at any moment is the main draw for this property. We also loved the town of La Tranche Sur Mer with its markets and ice cream shops and plenty of water sports facilities.
We hope to return in the future.
Owner response
Zoe, we were so glad that you enjoyed it! And we look forward to welcoming you back in the future.
LOCATION
La Tranche Sur Mer is an excellent holiday centre, with plenty of restaurants and bars in the summer, frequent concerts and other attractions. It enjoys a micro-climate which means it is nearly as warm and sunny as the Mediterannean coast. Its main attractions are its beaches of soft golden sand which extend for 13 kilometres, mostly south facing. The area is renowned for its water sports, and visitors can thrill to the exploits of the expert kitesurfers and windsurfers or develop their own surfing and paddle-boarding skills.
The beach nearest the apartment is a mere 150 metres away, with level access to benches overlooking the point. The beach benefits from having no car park, except for blue badge holders, so does not get too crowded even in high season. Although it is completely unspoilt, it does offer a small pop-up beach bar and surf school in the summer season, and there are lifeguards in attendance during July and August.
Off-season, there are plenty of opportunities to observe birds including hoopoes, and wild-life – red squirrels can often be seen in the pine and oak forest which lies behind the beach. La Rochelle is only an hour away and has year-round attractions. The chateaux of the Loire and the vineyards of Bordeaux are only a few hours’ drive away.
'A Day at the Beach'
The local beach is perfect for all ages, at all times of the tide. It's never too crowded, as it has no car park except for blue badge holders. It has miles of soft sand, rock pools to explore, shallow lagoons for small children to play in and surf of varying heights, so it's suitable for all sorts of activities - or none! Please send us photographs of your most impressive sandcastles, ball helter-skelters, sand sculptures etc. We feel a competition coming on . . .
'Beach Cafe'
There is a small pop-up cafe next to the surf school, from May to September (approximately). It does rather good light snacks and drinks, although its opening times are a bit idiosyncratic. Fortunately it's so near that's never a problem.
'Birdwatching'
There are nature reserves at La Belle Henriette, St Denis la Peyre and at L'Aiguillon. However, we've seen a hoopoe in La Tranche a couple of times, among other birds. Herons used to nest on one of the electricity posts on the main road from Angles, but the council have put spikes up to stop them. The herons have moved just a little further into the trees, which is probably safer for them!
'Boat Trips Round the Islands'
You can see Ile de Re from the point at the end of the road. A different way to see the local islands from La Tranche is by boat - check times from the Tourist Information Office.
'Bordeaux Vineyards'
The vineyards of Bordeaux are three hours away, but in our view, worth it! We bought wine for a daughter's wedding from the delightful Chateau Bauduc, who as well as us, supply Hotel du Vin, Rick Stein and a select few other restaurants. If you haven't got room to carry it home, they will ship to the UK or to their warehouse in Calais.
'Cave du Phare'
This well-located wine bar is new, but we have high hopes - it's under the same management as Le Phare West restaurant. Its choice of wines and artisanal beers looks extensive and ambitious. It sometimes hosts free concerts in high season.
'Cycling and Bicycle Hire'
There are two very helpful cycle hire shops in La Tranche, with a full range of cycles and accessories to suit all ages, including tag-alongs, tandems, and a pedalo-style chariot. Experience suggests you won't want more than an hour on that one.
'Ile de Re'
Well worth a visit, especially off-season when the toll is cheaper! St Martin is particularly pretty, and the Tintin museum is worth a look. We sometimes combine this with a trip to the airport, if picking up or dropping off. Nothing like sandy feet on the plane home and wet cossies in the hand luggage to extend the holiday feel.
'Jeux de Mourat'
This well-hidden playground in the woods is an absolute delight. It has a children's zip wire as well as the usual climbing frames, swings and slides. It also has a concrete table-tennis table (bats and balls are in the apartment), and a five-a-side pitch for the seriously energetic. It is near the VTT trail and the trim-track, off the cycle-path through the woods that comes out near the cinema. The local map in the apartment shows exactly where it is.
'La Rochelle'
If you fancy a day in La Rochelle (about an hour away), the aquarium has proved very popular with visiting children. Attractions for adults are numerous, both in and out of season!
'Le Nautile Restaurant '
This charming French seafood restaurant is within easy walking or cycling distance, and is open all year round. We've been going for the last ten years, and it continues to impress with the quality of the food and the presentation. The fixed price menus offer excellent value. If your menu French is a bit flaky, it might be worth taking a dictionary - one of us accidentally ordered whelks once. Another of us ended up eating them.
'Le Phare West Restaurant'
The most child-friendly restaurant in town, with some excellent salads for grown-ups as well! A good selection of moules frites, friendly and unflappable staff. Skip the puddings though, the best artisanal ice-cream bar in France is opposite. See if you can find anything to beat the caramel with salted butter cornet!
'Loire Chateaux'
We're not that far from the chateaux of the Loire, if you wanted to travel a little further.
'Markets'
The market in La Tranche is on Tuesdays and Saturdays, with an extra produce market on Thursdays in high season. Look out too for the occasional craft markets and 'vide greniers' (similar to car boot sales). The Tourist Information Office lists where and when these are being held. If you want to go a little further, the medieval market hall in Moutiers les Mauxfaits, 30 minutes north, is worth a look - market day there is Friday.
'Starfish and Coffee Bar'
Matt's lively bar offers large screen televisions showing English and French sporting events, and a trenchant Mancunian commentary
'Surfing and Paddle Boarding'
There is a pop-up surf school with equipment to hire and courses, on the local beach, from May to September - exact dates seem to depend on the weather! There is a more permanent surf school at La Terriere.
'Swimming Pool'
L'aunisceane swimming pool in La Tranche was closed at the end of last season for upgrading, so we have great hopes for it this year.
